The U2 is a rock band coming from Dublin, Ireland. The band was formed in 1976 by Bono Vox (vocals and guitar), The Edge (guitar, keyboards and vocals), Adam Clayton (bass guitar) and Larry Mullen Jr. (drums and percussions) when they were teenagers with limited musical proficiency. In the 80s , the band became really popular, they were noticed for their authentic sound, Bono’s impassioned vocals, and The Edge textural guitar playing. Their live success were as great as their success in selling records. The Rolling Stone magazine referred to them as “heroes to superstars”. The U2 responded to the dance revolution and reinvented themselves in 1991, with the album “Achtung Baby”. Similar experimentation continued for the 90s. Since 2000, U2 has made a more traditional sound which is based on their previous musical explorations.
U2 has sold more than 140 million albums worldwide and has won 22 Grammy Awards, more than any other band. The Rolling Stone magazine listed them as #22 in its list of the 100 greatest artists of all time. Along their career, as a band of solo artists, they have campaigned for human rights and social justice causes, including Amnesty International, the ONE Campaign, and Bono’s DATA (Debt, Aids, Trade in Africa) campaign.
