GIBA: The Brazilian volleyball player

Nowadays if you are a volleyball passionate, you may be a fan of Gilberto Godoy Filho, affectionately known as Giba in the volleyball world. The number one player of the world was expected to lead the Brazilian men´s team to repeat in Beijing´s Olympic Championship their Athens glory.

Born in a baker´s family in Londrina, Brazil in 1976, Giba passed through many adversities in his young years. He had leukemia when he was a baby and injured his arm badly in his childhood. The boy challenged the difficulties and showed great gift in volleyball.

Four years ago , a high Brazilian spirit won over the European champions, Italy, to complete a sweep of world championship, world league and the olympic games. Giba contributed 20 points for his team at the wonderful finale on olympic games in Athens. Brazilian coach Bernardo Resende has also shown great expectation to his captain: ´´Giba is the type of player that when it´s a big game, a big event, he´s always ready´´.

Despite the sad finale of the Olimpic games, because the men´s team was beaten, the people that are fans of volleyball have many reasons to love Giba. He has been doing his best.

RODEO

Rodeo is a sport based on the skills required for working with animals in a farm. Today rodeos are more common in the U.S, Canada, Mexico and it consists of several different modalities and judged events involving cattle and horses to test the speed and skills of the human cowboys and cowgirls, the athetes who participate on the competition.




This sport has many forms of competiton such as: Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Steer Wrestling and Roping. All of the animals which participate in the competitions are safely protected by law, so rodeos are legal.

In Brazil, there are some popular rodeos events such as Americana, Jaguariúna but the most famous one is ' Festa do Peão de Boiadeiro ' in Barretos-SP, and the party happens in August and it lasts 11 days.


Therefore, rodeo is a very beautiful and happy event where people have fun. Nowadays anyone can go to a party and watch country music concerts, see the competitions, the people and wear the typical clothes, like hat, boots, belts and basic jeans. So let's have fun!!

CRUZEIRO ESPORTE CLUBE

Cruzeiro Sport Club was founded in January 2, 1921. At first with the name of Societá Palestra Itália. The colors used were the same of the Italian flag and the first uniform was a green t-shirt, white shorts and red socks.
The first official game of the club was against Atletico-MG, in which it won with the score 3x0.
The idea to turn Palestra Itália into a Brazilian club came up in September, 1942. The new name was Ypiranga. However, the team played only one game under this new name. In October, 1942, the new name of the club: Cruzeiro Esporte Clube was aproved for good. A new era began. An era of victories, achievements, championships and so much happiness to the fans, who received the name of “China Azul”.
As in other teams, great football players made history in the club and become idols. Players like Nonato, Palhinha, Nelinho, Raul Plassman, Dida, Jairzinho, Luizão, Tostão, Sorín, Revétria, Alex... They all fought with spirit and sweat until the end to bring as many titles as they could to the team .

One of the best teams in Brazil, Cruzeiro won 2 national championships (1966 and 2003), 4 Brazilians Cups (1993, 1996, 2000, and 2003), 34 regional and 2 international titles – Libertadores of America (1976 and 1997). With all these titles, Cruzeiro recorded its name in the history of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and America. Definetely, it is a team which will never be forgotten.

THE OLYMPICS HISTORY

The Olympic Games nowadays are very different from what they were in their beginning.
The first Ancient Olympic Games happened in 776 B.C., in Olympia, Greece. They were part of the traditional cult of Zeus, even though their most important objective was showing the physical qualities of the athletes. Keeping good relations between cities of Greece was also important.

The ancient games included running, jumping and discus throwing – the discus were made of stone and later of iron, imagine their weight! They continued happening for nearly 12 centuries, until Emperor Theodosius banned them in 393 A.C. He did it because of the pagan character of the ceremony.

The first celebration of the modern Olympic Games was in 1896. Not as a coincidence, it happened in Greece, involving athletes from 14 nations. The most popular event was the marathon.

China was the country chosen to receive the latest games. They happened from August, 8 to August, 24 of this year and gave a great impression of China to the world. Despite being a developing country, China was able to build all the necessary shelters to the athletes and the structure to the modalities of games.

The opening and the closing ceremonies were also an exhibition of China’s effort. The country welcomed the world to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games at the Bird’s Nest Stadium with two thousand drums and fireworks. There were amazing acrobats, art and opera performances in both ceremonies.

Even though the Olympic Games have significantly changed since their creation, they still have a strong meaning: assemble people from different parts of the world and show them that they have something in common. We hope the spirit of the Olympic Torch to keep burning for a long time.

Women’s Football

Women have been playing football as long as the game exists. In the twentieth century Europe, French women played this game as part of Era’s folk festival. They believed that this goddess brought prosperity to the people. That is why they had a festival to worship her, with dances and games. During World War I it became popular in large scale, but it was banned in England and Scotland. Since then, women’s football has been forgotten.






But we watched the revival of the women’s game in the sixties. Lots of championships were created, like the Women’s World Cup. National and International competitions have been growing and helping many good players to became recognized.






FIFA awards the best football players every year and Marta, a Brazilian player, won this prize twice. Marta plays in a Swedish team, and like her, many other girls need to go abroad to play professionally. They dream about the day that women’s football will be recognized in Brazil and they won’t need to go abroad anymore.




Nowadays, women’s football has become professional and it is growing in popularity and participation. However, there is a lot of prejudice. In Brazil, like many other countries, a little importance has been given to the sport. But this is changing, new laws and championships are being creating to stimulate it. So, take your ball and let’s play!

DISTURBED

Disturbed is an American Hard Core band from Chicago. The group was started in 1996 with Dan Donegan, Steve "Fuzz" Kmak, Mike Wengren, David Draiman and Eric Awalt. Next in 2003 Eric exited band and in 2004 John Moyer joined at the band.
David Draiman grew into a religious family to which he fought, was expelled from five schools in his adolescence.
When asked about die-hard heavy metal fans not finding Disturbed heavy enough for be a metal band.
While I really love that type of music, it's not what we try to do. If we have to place things in context, we're more hard rock than heavy metal these days.
They have sold over 10 million albums in the world and the most important albums are: Ten Thousand Fits, The Sickness and Believe..
Ten Thousand Fits:
Was released in September 20, 2005 and are the most important album because have the most popular music of disturbed, are the most album sold in the world of them, was started in the Ozzyfest with Ozzy Osbourne System of a Down, Lacuna Coil, Dragon Force, Avenged Sevenfold, and Hatebreed and are the most popular album created f them.
The Sickness:
Is the first album of disturbed and all music of this album they sing in shows. And this album have a music of Steve Austin or the popular name “Stone Cold” a WWE legend titled "Glass Shatters”.
Believe:
Was realeased in September 2002, is the second album created of Disturbed and started three popular music: ‘Prayer’, Liberate’, ‘Voices’ and ‘Remember’.

Boys Like Girls

Boys Like Girls is a very good band. There are controversies about the musical style of this band. Is their style Emocore, Pop Punk or Hardcore? I like their lyrics, they are updated, rebelious and melodramatic. The members of the band are teenagers. They come from Boston, in USA. Their last nationwide tour was completed recently: Cute Is What We Aim For, Hit The Lights. We can see their success in the website Purevolume; their divulgation is always by the Internet. Their tour is with the bands Good Charllotte, The Maine and Metro. Their influences are from the bands Green Day and Blink 182.

My opinion of this band: Fantastic. Their last song, The Great Escape, is perfect. I love this band and recommend to all teenagers in the world.

Jack Johnson

Jack Hody Johnson was born in Honolulu, Havaí, on May 18, 1975 and grew up in the Bay North of Oahu, Havaí. He learned to play the guitar when he was 14 years, he started playing Metallica´s songs.

When participating in a competition of surf, Jack suffered an accident that left him 90 days motionless. During this period he started to compose influenced by his idol Bob Marley. He did not want to be a professional of surf, therefore he decided to study cinema in California when he was 18. Jack Johnson made 2 documentaries, both on surf: “The Broken down Melody” and “September Sessions”. Jack himself composed the sonorous tracks of the documentaries. Influenced by his friend Ben Harper, Jack recorded his first CD ' Brushfire Fairytales' in 2001.
He opened a recorder and after some time, he started to record his own Cds.

Today he has five cds, and in the last one he especially dedicated its songs to his family and to the close friends. His main sucessful songs are: “Flake”, “Taylor” and “Upside Down”.

Elvis Aaron Presley was an American singer, musician and actor. He sang Rock 'n' Roll, and he was known as "the King of Rock 'n' Roll". His songs are very good and the lyrics are very happy and romantic. It's a nice style of music, and it's very good to listen when you are happy.

He was born on January 8, 1935, on Tupelo,Mississipi, USA. His carrer began in 1954 as one of the first performers of rockabilly, a fusion between country and rhythm & blues. Presley sang other genres, including gospel, blues, ballads and pop. He was one of the best-selling and most influential artists in the history of popular music. He died on August 16, 1977, with health problems, drug dependency and other factors.

The songs that he sang were and are very famous nowadays. His most famous songs are: Always on My Mind, Sylvia, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Kiss me Quick, Suspicious Minds, Surrender, Can´t Help Falling In Love, It's Now Or Never, Jailhouse Rock, Love me Tender, Margherita, and a lot of others. He sang a lot of success by others artists, for example My Way, by Frank Sinatra. Thirty years after his death, he is the second artist with the most numbers of sales of Cds, behind only The Beatles. He is the first solo artist with the most numbers of hits, in all World with 600 million of CDs and 200 million of singles.

Concluding, Elvis was and is a famous person in all World who made a big success in the 50's and 60's, singing Rock 'n' Roll. I like him very much, because he had a beautiful voice, and the songs are great. I like to listen his romantic songs, it's nice to relax and think in our lives.
